You can now visit the place where one of the most decisive battles of the ancient years took place, “The Battle of Marathon” in 490 B.C., where the Athenians defeated the Persians. This is the place where the original route of the Marathon ran begun, due to an Athenian soldier (Phidipides) who ran the distance of 42,2 kms to Athens to announce the glorious victory.
You will visit the Marathon Tomb, the resting place of the 192 Athenian soldiers who died in the battle, as well as the Archeological Museum and the Marathon Race Museum. Following, you will enjoy a short drive to Lake Marathon, an artificial lake functioning still today as the main water reservoir for Athens. Apart from the magnificent view, you will be able to see the Marathon Dam, the only one in the world made entirely of Pentelic marble.
